CHICAGO, Aug. 21, 2009 — What’s the hottest topic in the U.S.? Ask anyone and they will say health care! The sparring between Republicans and Democrats has reached a fever pitch. News programs are showing daily footage of what Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi calls “angry mobs” of Republicans at town halls.
Talk show host Glenn Beck, who is being boycotted, criticized Pelosi for labeling citizens opposed to Obama’s proposed health care bill. Other conservative talk show hosts like Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh followed suit. All the talk of “angry mobs” has sent an avalanche of Internet traffic to one lucky website, which just happens to have the keywords “angry mob” in the domain name.
The owner of bought the domain name over a year ago, long before all the talk about “angry mobs.” “I used the domain to sell a variety of t-shirts for Cafe Press,” says the owner, a budding web designer who would like to remain anonymous. “A few weeks ago I was checking the traffic stats to all my websites and nearly fell out my chair! My website was getting a ton of traffic without any advertising.”
After realizing she hit the “Google lottery” of search traffic, the owner went to work creating a line of t-shirts, bumper stickers, town hall posters and other merchandise geared toward angry Republicans. One hot seller is a 10-pack of bumper stickers that read “ANGRY MOB MEMBER Coming to a Town Hall Near You!” with two scary images of Uncle Sam surrounding the message.
“Republicans have a great sense of humor, contrary to what some people believe,” the owner laughs. She says the response to the merchandise has been fantastic. “Those so-called ‘angry mobs’ are the reason Obama is now stalling on the idea of a ‘public option’ in the proposed health care bill. Many Republicans feel the joke is now on Nancy Pelosi,” the owner added. “Buying the merchandise gives them the guilty pleasure of rubbing it in.”
In the spirit of charity, the owner contacted the GOP and offered to pledge 10% of net profits from sales. “I thought it would be a great way to give back to my customers, since most are Republican,” the owner says. Apparently the GOP is nervous about having any association to the controversial site, despite the possibility of ongoing donations. The owner has yet to hear a response.
Could the reason be all those “Hell hath no fury like a group of angry Republicans” t-shirts? The owner has given up on the GOP and decided to look into charities instead … sounds like a much better idea.
