Filmmaker, Dhruv Dhawan, Crowd Funds 'Why Knot': Breaking the Silence on Monogamy and Marriage

Can we separate love and sex?

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Nov. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker Dhruv Dhawan (From Dust) launches Indiegogo campaign for his next film, WHY KNOT, which explores the origins of monogamy and its premise in our lives today.

Tapping into his background as a cultural anthropologist and his own relationships, Dhawan uses the cinematic medium to explore the conflict human beings face between their instincts and morals.

His film confronts taboo questions in a personal and self-reflective filmmaking style:

  • Why do we marry and cheat in almost every culture in the world?
  • Why is monogamy so important to a relationship and why does infidelity cause so much grief?
  • Is sexual jealousy innate in humans or nurtured in a world of possessions?
  • Is it possible to separate love and sex and stay in love?

A journey through time and the evolution of human relationships, WHY KNOT discovers the biology of sex, the history of patriarchy and the politics of monogamy told through the lives of scientists, polyamorists, swingers, adulterers and Dhawan's loved ones.

Can we separate love and sex and stay in love? The answer is still to be determined.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Through art and introspection we wish to leave a film behind which will help others make informed decisions about the most valuable relationships in their lives.

This film's objective is not to advocate for or against monogamy, but to break the silence on an issue which affects so many relationships today. Our vision is to empower relationships and to encourage communication within, with the hope that one day, infidelity and the containment of our desires may only be a remnant of human history.

ABOUT WHY KNOT
WHY KNOT is a documentary film that tells the story of a filmmaker trying to separate love and sex as the chorus to marry grows louder.

As he attends various lavish weddings within his family, Dhruv is pressured to follow suit and tries to find answers to some pressing questions by interviewing his family and experts in the field.

His search takes us through his own home and into the biology of sex, the history of patriarchy and the politics of monogamy where scientists, polyamorists, swingers, adulterers and Dhruv's loved ones become characters in this self reflexive narrative.

WHY KNOT is an intellectual and emotional journey through the landscape of monogamy, questioning what it means to be human and to confront conflicts between our instincts and our morals.
