Father of Abducted Florida Girl Endorses Crime-Fighting Backpack to Help Save Lives

CALUMET PARK, Ill., May 10, 2005 — The father of Carlie Brucia, the 11-year-old girl who was abducted from behind a car-wash in Sarasota, Fla. in February 2004, is endorsing a new line of security alarm backpacks that sound a piercing siren much like a car alarm when activated by pulling a rip-cord on the shoulder strap.

The recent murder of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford has many parents in Florida wondering what they can do to better protect their children.

Joseph Brucia of Long Island, N.Y. is advising parents of school-aged children to consider the new Carlie Security Backpack(TM) that was invented by Edric Sizemore, President of EDCO Innovations Inc. Sizemore had been test-marketing his patented Guardian Backpack(TM) since 1999, but redesigned the concept in 2004 after seeing the security videotape on national television of Carlie Brucia being kidnapped and then learning of her death.

Appearing and constructed much like any standard-sized backpack commonly used by school children, high school and college students, the lightweight Carlie Security Backpack is discreetly equipped with two 130-decibel sirens that can be heard within a 100-yard radius and a high-intensity strobe light that can be seen from up to 400 yards away. In what he describes as "the world’s loudest personal alarm system," Sizemore says the sirens and strobe light, which are powered by double-A (AA) batteries, can run continuously for up to five hours before replacing batteries and is louder than most car alarms.

Sizemore’s passion for preventing assaults on women and children was inflamed after the February 2004 kidnapping of Carlie Brucia. Although it occurred only 300 feet from where people were playing golf, no one saw it or heard her. Carlie was last seen wearing a red top and blue jeans - and carrying a pink backpack. Several months after the tragedy, Sizemore arrived in New York to meet with Joseph Brucia for his support to increase public awareness of EDCO’s security alarm backpack concept. Mr. Brucia feels that a security backpack could have made a difference in saving his daughter’s life. EDCO is contributing a generous portion of sales from the Carlie Security Backpack to the Carlie Rescue Fund, founded by Mr. Brucia. The fund was created to lend assistance to families that suffer similar types of tragedies.

Such tragedies bring into focus the need to emphasize prevention.

The Montel Williams Show recently featured a demonstration of the Carlie Security Backpack. Montel Williams said, "Think about a child armed with [the backpack] when they’re standing at a bus stop and that goes off, are you kidding me, will not every person nearby take a look, and all you need is people looking."

In addition to serving as a personal alarm system for potential victims of assault or abduction, the Carlie Security Backpacks may also be useful for injured or stranded hikers, skiers and joggers.
