Well, any gamer trying the new Crackers Farmyard Adventures Mania from Fast Effects Studios will certainly be laughing. Like all Fast Effects products, this app is simple to get into but deviously addictive after just a couple of plays.
The idea on this one is to "pop" all the chickens, and they do pop in a glorious cloud of feathers and squawks, and clear the farmyard. There are 5 farm stages, with each farm stage made up of 30 different levels – so there's lots of challenge.
Each level shows a different spread of eggs, chicks and chickens and you get a set number of taps per game. There are some lovely graphics at work: hit an egg, it becomes a chick; hit a chick, it becomes a chicken; hit a chicken, it explodes. Simple.
The art is knowing where to start, and that's where the experience builds. Each time you tap on a chicken and make it explode, so bits fly off vertically and horizontally hitting any eggs, chicks or chickens in their path. If you're not sure where to start you can "chicken out" and use the "hints and tips" facility, but you can still get well and truly outwitted by an egg – gaming shame at its worst!
As with all Fast Effects Studios' products, great graphics and sound make for quick engagement and players are hooked from the earliest levels. Ben Burns, head of game design, explained the design strategy, "When you're developing gaming apps for mobiles you have to constantly remember the size of the screen the player will be using. Features that look great on the PC as you're programming can be completely lost once you scale down to the phone screen; the skill is to give the characters, the eggs, chicks and chickens, enough personality to survive the size reduction."
With Crackers Farmyard Adventures Mania that certainly works. The mayhem on the farm gets progressively worse at each level and farm stage leading rapidly to pure cartoon carnage.
This game is definitely not for vegetarians.
