COLUMBUS, Texas, Nov. 10, 2009 — In her debut historical novel, “Together Always: The Spirit of Fehdegeist” (published by iUniverse), Gwen Marie Brown transports readers back to a war-ravaged Berlin in 1848, a place and time when the young people finally took to the streets with other revolutionaries to oppose the Prussian soldiers restricting their freedoms and slowly taxing them to early deaths.
Seething with resentment because of unethical taxation, unrelenting embargoes, propriety only for those lucky few who numbered among noble bloodlines, not to mention the extreme restrictions placed upon the press and free speech, Ernst von Kohl and Henri Ordeneaux, young cousins and aristocratic students at the University of Leipzig, immigrated to the booming frontier of Texas, a state that advertised free land and entire communities built to support settlement. Though untamed and not yet colonized, this new country offered a fresh start and, perhaps more importantly, a necessary escape from their former home, now riddled with oppression.
As part of the small group of intellectuals who fled Europe because of their philosophical beliefs and the raging environment now unfit for progress, Ernst and Henri endured the seemingly endless ocean journey before landing as pioneers in their new home, bringing with them only their cultivated minds and fehdegeist, the German spirit of endurance and constancy.
Becoming two of the first landowners and cattlemen of Texas, Ernst and Henri began to think they had found some measure of happiness through their numerous hardships, but what began with the historic revolutionary battle in the streets of Berlin ended up leading these two to unspeakable violence, unparalleled romance, enduring sea voyages, gritty cattle drives, surprising slave uprisings and the ultimate test of friendship when Ernst, community leader and opponent of slavery, must decide whether or not to fight for the freedoms desired by the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Can their relationship survive the personal trials that await them? Will the uncompromising Ernst consent to fight for the freedoms of all people, just as he fought in his former homeland? And will Henri oppose his beloved cousin to protect his comfortable way of life? Find the answers in Brown’s new book, “Together Always,” a story of rugged adventure populated by fearless revolutionaries who must navigate two changing governments.
