Environmental Services & Solutions Corporation (Essco) Safety Check began operations as specialists in XRF testing in 2007. Their goals are to utilize advanced technologies, such as X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to help people, businesses and industries “know what is in their environment.”
BELLEVUE, Wash., Feb. 12, 2009 — From its inception, Essco Safety Check has worked with consumers, retailers, and manufacturers alongside local, state and federal government agencies (such as the EPA) to ensure that products made, sold and used are safe from potentially harmful toxins such as lead, cadmium and mercury.
Throughout 2007 and early 2008, Essco Safety Check worked with organizations, such as the Washington Toxics Coalition, to help pass Washington State’s children’s safe products act (HB 2647).
On July 3, 2008, Essco Safety Check testing for a Seattle based toy retailer, using XRF technology and their proprietary software, led the CPSC to issue a nationwide recall of children’s jewelry that contained excessive levels of lead.
On July 29, 2008, as an expert in the use of XRF technology for consumer product testing, Essco Safety Check presented to the Washington State’s Children’s Safe Products Act advisory committee, answering questions about children’s product testing and XRF Technology.
In recent weeks, as a known leader in the area of XRF-based consumer product testing, Essco Safety Check received a flood of emails and phone calls from manufacturers and retailers, coast to coast. These businesses, concerned with the task of achieving Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) compliance, turned to Essco Safety Check to provide assistance in understanding the impact and guidelines of the CPSIA, as well as XRF-based testing services for the products they produce or sell.
On the evening of Monday February 9, 2009, the CPSC released enhanced guidance (http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/smbus/cpsiasbguide.html) regarding compliance with the CPSIA for Businesses, Resellers, Crafters and Charities. These new guidelines now explicitly allow the use of XRF technology, in association with a Quality Assurance Program, to ensure products meet the requirements of the law. This testing may include testing raw materials, components and final products. The CPSC guidance states:
For lead content testing, one solution would be to hire a qualified, trained person who can quickly screen all of your raw materials and finished products with a handheld device called an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) machine.
