Disabled Veteran’s Story of Triumph Over Debt and Identity Theft in ‘Evil Money Evil Credit’ Throws Lifeline to Others on Brink of Financial Ruin

PHOENIX, Aug. 20, 2009 — Building and maintaining good credit is a puzzling task for many individuals. “Evil Money Evil Credit” (http://www.altonjjones.com), a book by motivational speaker, author and disabled veteran Alton Jones, provides an explanation and guidelines for enhancing individual credit performance.

Jones wrote “Evil Money Evil Credit” (High Tower Books, October 2005, $8.88) for individuals with fair to very poor credit, those who have been denied credit, anyone who rents an apartment or furniture or who has used a payday lending facility. The book draws from his experiences in order to educate readers on the perils of mismanaging personal finance.

“As a teenager I had to deal with multiple collection agency calls because my mother had poor credit,” said Jones. “I promised myself that I’d be different, but it was the only path I knew.” As an adult, after being honorably discharged as a disabled veteran and enduring seven months of unemployment, Jones worked two jobs and drove 150 miles round-trip up to three nights a week to attend night school.

His diligence paid off when he received his master’s degree and began working in the semiconductor industry. However, industry layoffs sent Jones back into financial turmoil. Although he eventually reacquired full-time employment, the debt he had accumulated over the years forced him to take a second job as a taxi driver.

Jones paid off his debts, overcame incidents of having his identity stolen and worked diligently to obtain excellent credit ratings. “I decided to share my experiences in the hope that my book will help readers avoid as many hardships as possible,” he said.

Author Bio

Alton J. Jones is a native of Phoenix, Arizona, where he works as an information technology professional. At age 19, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant, Aviation Branch, AZARNG and served in the 108th Aviation Battalion. Later, he was assigned to the Ordnance Corps and promoted to first lieutenant. Jones’ active duty assignments included the Second Infantry Division in Korea and the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas.

He suffered a collapse of his left lung which he believes is due to a number of factors: chemical exposure during training, the lapse of time between training and performance of his duties at Fort Hood, stress, harassment from an executive officer, and the threat of assignment to wartime duties in the Gulf War. The Veterans Administration determined Jones was eligible for service-related disability and he received an honorable discharge.

Jones holds a master’s degree in Management Science from the University of Central Texas, a bachelor’s in Aviation Business Administration from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and an associate’s degree from the New Mexico Military Institute. He is an active member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Korean War Veterans Association.
