Deep Web Technologies Releases WorldWideScience.org Application for SciVerse Hub

New Solution Is Available Now in SciVerse Application Gallery

SANTA FE, N.M., Jan. 18, 2012 — Deep Web Technologies™ (DWT), the leader in federated search of the Deep Web, today announced that working in close cooperation with OSTI, the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information and the operating agent for WorldWideScience.org (WWS), and Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, it has released a WWS application for SciVerse Applications. Elsevier's Application Marketplace & Developer Network features a marketplace that allows researchers to select and create applications that enhance research and search results obtained from the new SciVerse Hub.

"The WWS application for the SciVerse Hub allows researchers to seamlessly search WWS content within SciVerse Hub," said Rafael Sidi, Vice President, Application Marketplace and Developer Network at Elsevier. "Our collaboration with DWT benefits researchers by increasing accessibility to WWS content and enhancing research productivity."

The WWS application provides a new way of accessing WWS resources. It can be found in the SciVerse Applications and used in conjunction with SciVerse Hub. By entering search terms in the Hub query box, users can search WWS in parallel with SciVerse Hub content, thereby exposing researchers to high-value content from around the world that they might not otherwise discover.

Using the SciVerse Hub search query, the WWS application displays relevance-ranked search results in a parallel frame. Clicking on any of the links in the application will take the researcher to the publisher of the article or web page. Opening the application in the larger (Canvas) view will show the WWS site directly within SciVerse Hub.

"WorldWideScience.org is very excited to be part of Elsevier's Applications & Developer Network," stated Lorrie Apple Johnson, Operating Agent representative for the WorldWideScience Alliance and Product Manager for WWS.org.  "WorldWideScience.org contains a wealth of current and timely scientific and technical information from countries around the world. Much of this information could be termed 'grey literature' and includes technical reports, conference proceedings, theses and dissertations, open access publications, and multimedia, such as videos of lectures, workshop/conference presentations, and scientific research experiments. SciVerse users will benefit from having access to this type of information."

"We have been fortunate to work closely with Elsevier and WorldWideScience staff on development of the WWS SciVerse application," noted Abe Lederman, President and CTO of DWT. "I am very impressed with the capabilities of the SciVerse Applications framework and the many points where we can integrate access to content in the 'Deep Web' that complements and enhances the content that is available via SciVerse."

The WWS application is available for free to all registered SciVerse users.

About Deep Web Technologies

Deep Web Technologies (http://www.deepwebtech.com) creates custom, sophisticated federated search solutions, based on its Explorit™ Research Accelerator, for clients who demand precise, accurate results. It is the tool of choice when needing to access the Deep Web, a collection of Internet information sources that are generally not accessible to web spiders or crawlers and cannot, therefore, be indexed for search by popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo! or Bing. Explorit performs real-time searches of multiple information sources, in parallel, merging the results into a single page. Serving Fortune 500 companies, the Science.gov Alliance, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Defense Technical Information Center, Stanford University, the Texas Medical Center, WorldwideScience.org and a wide variety of other customers, partners and research and library alliances, Deep Web Technologies has built a reputation as the "researcher's choice" for its advanced, agile information discovery tools.

About WorldWideScience.org

WorldWideScience.org (WWS) is a global science gateway developed by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) in partnership with federated search vendor Deep Web Technologies. Governed by the multilateral WorldWideScience Alliance, WWS provides a simultaneous live search of more than 80 databases from government and government-sanctioned organizations from over 70 participating nations. Using federated search technology to drill down into the "deep web," WWS.org allows the user to search multiple sources with a single query. The individual databases are searched in real time, and WWS.org then ranks the hits from all the sources in relevance order. The user can review the results list and link to the host site of a particular hit for more detailed information such as the bibliographic citation, abstract, and in some cases, the full text of the document. The WWS portal plays a leading role in bringing together the world's scientists to accelerate the discoveries needed to solve the planet's most pressing problems.
