Crutchfield Dermatology Reports a New Wrinkle in the Quest for Smooth and Youthful Skin

EAGAN, Minn., Feb. 23, 2007 — Crutchfield Dermatology (Eagan, MN) reports that Restylane appears to have even greater benefits than previously understood. This product is a popular injectable skin filler containing hyaluronic acid used to correct wrinkles, scars, and skin problems associated with aging. Research published in the February 2007 Archives of Dermatology demonstrates that Restylane stimulates natural collagen production and improves sun-damaged skin.

"This confirms what I am seeing clinically in many of my patients. I recommend a follow-up treatment in eight months, but I rarely have to use even half of the volume at a follow-up visit that I did initially. This study confirms that patients are getting a much better value from their treatments than originally believed, a very good deal for the patients," reports Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D. This is the first study of its kind that suggests the soft-tissue filler Restylane works by stretching cells that make the protein collagen in a way that causes the skin to create new collagen, according to the report.

Well over one million cosmetic filling treatments are performed annually in the U.S. Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most popular fillers, although fat, collagen and even silicone are also used. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar-based gel produced in skin and connective tissue whose molecules bind to water in the skin, hydrating and firming its structure. The loss of volume that comes with the loss of hyaluronic acid is associated with skin dehydration, wrinkling and what we most commonly perceive to be "aging of the face."

The study was condicted at the University of Michigan Medical School-Ann Arbor. "The study was done exclusively with Restylane. Other branded hyaluronic agents such as Captique or Juvederm were not studied so the results cannot be directly attributed to them. However, I would be surprised if future research did not show similar results with these agents. In the war against wrinkles, I oftentimes combine several agents such as Botox Cosmetic, Restylane, chemical peels and Pixel laser treatments for facial rejuvenation. The results can be very, very impressive," states Dr. Crutchfield.
