Congressman Jared Huffman, Local Environmental Heroes to Be Recognized at Environmental Leader Awards Ceremony

Awards Ceremony will feature Keynote from former California Secretary of Resources Huey Johnson

MARIN, Calif., Sept. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — On Friday, October 18th Congressman Jared Huffman will be presented the 2013 Gold Medal Environmental Leader of Marin Award by Huey Johnson, former California Secretary of Resources and Founder of the Resource Renewal Institute. The awards ceremony will take place at the Mill Valley Community Center at 7:30 p.m.

According to Catriona Glazebrook, the founder of the Environmental Leader of Marin Awards and Producer of EarthScope Media, "Jared Huffman has been a longstanding advocate for environmental protection, and we are so proud to have him championing these important issues in Congress. A longtime Marin resident, Congressman Huffman has written successful legislation to protect wildlife, strengthen the Department of Fish and Wildlife, ban shark finning in California, and protect our coastline from offshore drilling."

Several other Marin-based environmental heroes will be honored:

  • Rebekah Collins: Volunteer Community Leader Award for lighting the spark that launched Marin Clean Energy,
  • Laurette Rogers: Outstanding Environmental Educator Award for her founding of STRAW "Students and Teachers Restoring a Watershed,"
  • Good Earth: Sustainable Business Award for their leadership in the food and health industry for more than 40 years,
  • Walker Creek Ranch: Environmental School/Education Center K-12 Award for their more than 50 years of offering K-12 youth outdoor adventures.

The awards ceremony will begin with a keynote speech by former California Secretary for Resources Huey Johnson, the formidable environmentalist featured in the film "Rebels with Cause." Johnson's pioneering 1981 policy, "Investing for Prosperity," was one of the first comprehensive, long-term environmental plans in existence, and has influenced nation-scale environmental policies such as in the Netherlands and New Zealand.

Former County Supervisor Charles McGlashan was recognized at the first Environmental Leader of Marin Awards in 2005, and Marty Griffin received the award in 2007.

Eighty percent of ticket proceeds are tax deductible and will support the non-profit EarthScope Media & TEMN featured in National Geographic Kids. The program has provided vocational training to more than 900 high school youths in communications, science and technology for more than a decade, www.earthscopemedia.com.
