Citizen Group to Hold Demonstration Outside Governor’s Office Friday

CHICAGO, Jan. 8, 2009 — Rod Must Resign, a new citizen group, will hold a demonstration this Friday, calling for the resignation of Governor Rod Blagojevich. The organization will be collecting signatures, passing out buttons and holding signs asking the Governor to resign. Lunch will be provided following the demonstration. Prominent Chicago lawmakers and 50 Illinois residents are expected to attend.

The group was founded by Scott Lee Cohen, a local businessman and entrepreneur. Cohen formed the group once it became clear that Governor Blagojevich was not going to resign from office. The severity of the charges filed against the Governor inspired him to take action. Blagojevich, who once promised to fight governmental corruption, had now betrayed the very people who put him in office. Cohen was outraged and he knew he wasn’t alone. Cohen has reached out to numerous residents of Illinois, including representatives from various public interest groups such as the Better Government Association, students from local colleges, and his own classmates at Depaul University.

Cohen recently launched a website for the group, http://www.rodmustresign.com, where he hopes to reach even more “everyday citizens” to participate in the demonstration. The website includes the latest news on the charges facing the Governor and information on where to send petitions and letters requesting the Governor’s resignation.

“Rod’s been asked by President-Elect Obama and Senator Durbin. Now, he’s being asked by the voters, the people who put him in office, to resign,” Cohen said.
