Breast Enhancement Options Include More Than Just Augmentation

Size isn't the only consideration for cosmetic breast surgery, says plastic surgeon Dr. Kiya Movassaghi

EUGENE, Ore., Oct. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — When most people think of breast enhancement surgery, size is the first thing that comes to mind. Although augmentation is still the most popular type of breast enhancement surgery, it's not the only option for a woman who wishes to improve her shape. Total breast enhancement can, in fact, involve other surgeries to improve the appearance of the breasts.

"Having bigger breasts isn't a goal for every woman," says Dr. Kiya Movassaghi, a leading Oregon plastic surgeon. "For some it's about achieving symmetry. Still others are seeking a reduction in size, while many women benefit from a breast lift. Liposuction can also be used to help sculpt the breasts into a more pleasing shape."

Dr. Movassaghi says each of the following procedures can help enhance the breasts and provide overall balance for the silhouette:

  • Breast augmentation to correct asymmetry. Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). But breast implants can also help women who have one breast that is significantly larger than the other. Breast asymmetry is common and no woman has breasts that are perfectly alike; in extreme cases, however, one option for resolving the problem is through the use of implants.
  • Breast augmentation to correct tuberous breasts. Tuberous breasts are a congenital abnormality that affects numerous women—many of whom are unaware of why their breasts are so different from their peers. With a specialized variation on breast augmentation, an experienced plastic surgeon can transform the tubular breast's shape to a full, rounded shape.
  • Breast lift. Many women experience changes in the breasts from aging, genetics, or pregnancy. A breast lift is designed to restore a youthful contour to the breasts and can be a stand-alone operation. A combination of an augmentation and a breast lift often achieves the best results for many women. A breast lift and/or augmentation are often components in a "mommy makeover" procedure designed to restore the pre-pregnancy body.
  • Breast reduction. A breast reduction can help alleviate chronic back, neck, and shoulder problems, as well as other health concerns caused by overly large breasts. While most cosmetic surgery is elective, some insurance policies cover qualifying breast reduction procedures. Liposuction can also be used to further refine the results of a breast reduction by targeting the axillary area near the armpits.

Breast enhancement options involve far more than simply increasing the size of the breasts. By consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon, women can achieve a more pleasing silhouette through a variety of breast shaping procedures.
