Alton J. Jones is a native of Phoenix, Arizona, where he works as an information technology professional. At age 19, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant, Aviation Branch, AZARNG and served in the 108th Aviation Battalion. Later, he was assigned to the Ordnance Corps and promoted to first lieutenant. Jones' active duty assignments included the Second Infantry Division in Korea and the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas. He suffered a collapse of his left lung which he believes is due to a number of factors: chemical exposure during training, the lapse of time between training and performance of his duties at Fort Hood, stress, harassment from an executive officer, and the threat of assignment to wartime duties in the Gulf War. The Veterans Administration determined Jones was eligible for service-related disability and he received an honorable discharge. Jones holds a master's degree in Management Science from the University of Central Texas, a bachelor's in Aviation Business Administration from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and an associate's degree from the New Mexico Military Institute.
