For years, the story of Tommy Timber was just a cherished family tradition in the Berman household. Berman said, "I wrote Tommy Timber on a lark after seeing a discarded pile of unsold Christmas trees on a lot, and it became a holiday tradition for me to pull out the manuscript and read the story to my kids." In 2012, one of his now-grown grandchildren introduced him to his friend, Matt Barnard, who happened to be an illustrator.

The old Tommy Timber manuscript soon took on new life. As if words and artwork weren't enough, the story next captured the imagination of one of Berman's golf buddies, Denny Slawn, a professional musician and composer. Soon, Tommy Timber the Story of a Christmas Tree was published as a colorfully illustrated book that included a CD containing the delightful Tommy Timber song and a narrated version of the book.

The Tommy Timber saga didn't end with its publication. Tommy's dream of becoming a real Christmas tree has actually come true! This year the story caught the attention of Jesse Davis, of River Ridge Tree Farms, a past winner of the national competition to provide the White House Christmas tree. River Ridge chose Tommy Timber as the brand name for the farm's line of miniature Christmas trees. Tommy is now on the recommended reading list of the National Christmas Tree Growers Association.
