Joyce Clyde (J.C.) Hall was born on Aug. 29, 1891, in David City, Neb., and learned early on the value of hard work. As a young man, Hall held all manner of odd jobs before going into the business of selling postcards with his two brothers, Rollie and Bill. They came across many of the challenges that face young entrepreneurs and tackled them with innovative tactics. Benedict writes:
One design that J.C. identified with was, “When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot in it, and hang on.” In the years that followed, there were times when it was all he could do to hang on!
