BLOOMINGTON, Ind., March 30, 2009 — Why people go out of their way to commit heinous crimes and atrocities in the name of ideology or religion remains an unanswered question for many around the world. “The Destruction of Invasion and its Side Effects” (published by AuthorHouse), the new non-fiction novel by first-time authors Ahmad Popalyar and Delores Bell, illustrates through words the effects of hundreds of years of invasions and destruction across the country of Afghanistan.
“The Destruction of Invasion and its Side Effects” is a compilation of Popalyar’s experiences while growing up in Afghanistan, and gives an inside look at the devastating effects of foreign invasion on a highly religious and culturally motivated nation. Each of the invading entities, for their own reasons and interests, committed numerous brutalities against Afghanistan, which in return put the country very far behind other parts of the world in terms of development, technology and political standing. The authors write:
When somebody robs someone’s property and causes destruction, killing a member of the family the memory of that horrible thing never leaves your mind. Its side effect is the family’s natural feelings, grief and mourning. Even though the invasion is done and the person has died the family of the victim never forgets the tragedy for the rest of their lives, it is a possibility even their children have inherited it. The depression the family suffered or even the revenge and vendetta against the invader by the family would have some influence. This matter is probably taken lightly by the invader but the consequence and side effect is so strong and unforgettable. The civilized world has an obligation to stop invaders who intentionally invade and destroy their neighbors.

About the Authors: Ahmad Popalyar, owner of Stefano’s Ice Cafe in Bloomington, Ind., moved to the United States from Afghanistan in 1986. He has a bachelor’s degree in planning and development from Kabul University in Kabul, Afghanistan. He worked for the Ministry of Planning for many years before moving to Indiana, working for The Herald Times in Bloomington for 14 years. Popalyar has two sons, both of whom graduated from Indiana University, one with a bachelor’s degree in business, and the other with a master’s degree in criminal justice.
Delores Bell was born in Bloomfield, Ind., in 1930 at her grandmother’s home but was raised in nearby Bloomington on a farm with three younger brothers. Growing up in the ’30s during the Depression was very difficult, but living in the country on a farm gave her a great love of animals and nature. Bell has three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two dogs and three cats. She still works part-time with Popalyar at Stefano’s Ice Cafe, and also cares for an elderly woman.
