TAMPA, Fla., April 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) is pleased to announce the selection of Brigham and Women's Hospital as the winner of the 2013 Leape Ahead Award.
In 2009, the Boston hospital launched a Management Leadership Track that provides exceptional educational experiences at the postgraduate level for physicians with an interest in management or business. Judges on the Leape Ahead Selection Committee said the program embodies the spirit of the award, which recognizes medical schools and teaching hospitals making extraordinary strides in promoting a culture of leadership, professionalism, communication and teamwork among medical students and residents.
"In today's complex and rapidly evolving health care industry, there has never been a greater need for engaged physician leaders," said Peter Angood, MD, ACPE's CEO. "Brigham and Women's Hospital should be congratulated for recognizing this need and for their role in taking the initiative of training the physician leaders of tomorrow."
The Medical Management Leadership Track (MLT) was created to develop outstanding clinical and managerial skills among future health care leaders. The first cohort of seven MLT trainees completed the curriculum in June 2012. The number of residents has steadily grown, and there are currently 39 active participants.
The track is composed of three main elements:
- The Longitudinal Leadership Seminar Series, where invited speakers spend an hour discussing their areas of expertise with current MLT residents.
- Week-long didactic sessions for second- and third-year residents, including "field trips" such as meetings with physicians serving in government leadership roles and tours of a patient-centered medical home clinic.
- Group and individual projects focused on quality improvement initiatives for issues identified by the residents.
Graduates of the MLT have gone on to take prominent leadership positions, including the current director of Medicaid for Massachusetts; an incoming White House Fellow; a practicing clinician and health care venture capitalist at Google Ventures; and a number of faculty at academic medical centers around the nation.
The annual Leape Ahead Award honors the dedication of Dr. Lucian Leape toward the advancement of efficient, effective and caring delivery of medicine in the U.S. It also underscores ACPE's strong commitment to patient safety and quality, as well as the lifelong development and support of physician leaders.
