Aquatics to be a significant topic at this year’s convention
PALM SPRINGS, Calif., March 8, 2010 — The 2010 California & Pacific Southwest Recreation & Park Training Conference will be held in Palm Springs March 9-12th. The convention will feature sessions geared towards helping operators and officials for parks and recreation departments across the Pacific Southwest gain the knowledge and understanding needed to improve their parks.
Aquatics in particular will be well-represented this year. Historically aquatic centers and community swimming pools have drained parks and recreation budgets due to the high cost and low returns they offer to their owners. Recently there has been a major push in the industry to make aquatic centers more energy efficient, reduce water use, and increase participation to offer better returns to the parks and recreation departments who run them.
Among the sessions include:
- “Creating Truly Inclusive Aquatic Facilities,” which will cover aquatic programming for those with special needs, such as disabled, blind, or deaf swimmers.
- “Aquatic Facilities that Increase Revenues” will concentrate on how to maximize pool revenue, increase attendance, and improve customer satisfaction.
- “Blue is the New Green” will cover how to make pools more eco-friendly and energy-efficient.
- “Aquatics Intensive Workshop” – a roundtable of professionals who will share their experience and opinions in a truly interactive and powerful session.
The educational committee of CPRS has landed some of the premier minds in California’s aquatic market, including: Randy Mendioroz, Principal in Charge and Dennis Berkshire, Senior Associate of Aquatic Design Group; Tim Gilbert, Principal at MIG; Kotaro Nakamura, Principal at RNT Architects; Bob Mueting, Principal of RJM Design; and Kevin McArdle, Community Services Director of the City of Rancho Cucamonga.
The common theme throughout each of the sessions is Mendioroz, Aquatic Design Group’s President, who has overseen the design of over 2,500 aquatic facilities around the world and who has been a long-time sponsor of CPRS: “CPRS is a great organization geared at helping their constituents by arming them with practical knowledge and information. It’s an honor to be selected to speak on these four important topics.”
