In Pictures Launches Free Online Computer Tutorials
FREDERICK, Md., Jan. 8, 2007 -- Today In Pictures launched
its new line of free computer how-to tutorials, available at
http://www.inpics.net. There are 12 online tutorials on
subjects such as Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.org, and
Dreamweaver 8. The tutorials can be used by anyone, free of
charge.
In Pictures tutorials are based on pictures, not text. They
contain one-tenth as many words as a typical computer how-to
book. How-to books typically contain 50,000-100,000 words of
text, but these online tutorials contain only around five
thousand.
The tutorials were developed as part of a U.S. Department of
Education study, to make it easier for people with learning
disabilities to learn computer subjects. When the study was
completed in 2006, it showed that the illustration-based
tutorials worked well for everyone, not just those with
special needs.
All of the tutorials are free to use by anyone. Revenue is
generated for In Pictures by banner advertisements on each
page. In Pictures' founder, Chris Charuhas, says, "Our
ad-based revenue model wouldn't have worked two years ago.
But now, with the growth of online advertising and the
advent of content-indexed ad systems such as Google AdSense,
we think it's very promising."
Later this year, In Pictures will release new free tutorials
on Microsoft Office 2007 programs, as well as Photoshop,
Photoshop Elements, and Fireworks. There will also be new
Web programming tutorials for non-programmers, on MySQL,
PHP, and Perl.
