Universities Switch from Big Name Bandwidth Shaping
Appliance to NetEqualizer
IT Directors Find APConnections Appliance Requires No
Maintenance
LAFAYETTE, Colo., May 2, 2006 -- Loyola University and
Macalester College have both replaced appliances purchased
from a popular, big name manufacturer with the NetEqualizer
by APconnections.
Ted Fines, Assistant Director of Network Services,
Macalester College and Ben Galliart, Director of Information
Technology and Services of Loyola University, both found the
"big name" product to require nearly constant maintenance.
Policies had to be manually input. This device often
throttled back all traffic and continued to throttle an
application even when there was no need.
"We're former users of a high end expensive packet shaping
product. I cannot express enough how much better the
NetEqualizer is for us. One, the NetEqualizer, once its
simple setup is done, requires no time to manage. Literally
none--it just works. Two, I no longer receive complaints
from users about high latency, choppy streaming, or some
other problem caused by a new protocol unrecognized by our
former Wan Optimization solution, or that I hadn't yet
created a special rule or class for. Three, we now have the
lowest latency we've ever seen with the NetEqualizer in
place, so latency-sensitive apps have no more issues and do
not need any kind of special management. Four, the cost of
the NetEqualizer appliance is lower than the annual
maintenance contract on our former solution. It is an
excellent product, and a great value," said Ted Fines,
Assistant Director of Network Services, Macalester College.
Ben Galliart, System Adminstrator, Loyola University, said
in an interview: "NetEqualizer turned things around. No more
shuffling protocols. And it can handle far more
simultaneous internet connections without locking up. The
competitors shaper had us constantly changing our policies
to keep things under control. NetEqualizer allows us to
have the device meet our policies and requires little or no
changes once in place."
NetEqualizer is a plug-and-play network optimization
appliance that is flexible and scalable. It has been on the
market over two years and is used in universities, schools,
ISPs, hotels, business centers and other vertical markets
around the U.S. and around the world. NetEqualizer is solid
state appliance based Linux. NetEqualizer's unique
technology differs significantly from other major
manufacturers. It uses behavior shaping, which dynamically
and automatically controls network flow. Specific policies
do not need to be input, and no action is taken by the unit
until the established percentage of flow is exceeded.
Because of this unique technology, it allows network
administrators and operators to quickly and easily bring
network traffic into balance without having to build and
manage extensive policy libraries and with no changes to
existing network structure.
Macalester College is a private undergraduate liberal arts
college located in St. Paul, Minnesota. They have high
admission standards, a low student to teacher ratio, and
they have an emphasis on languages and international
affairs. They boast famous alumni such as U.N.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Macalester Colleges network serves 1,900 students and 6-700
staff and faculty.
Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois, is a Jesuit Catholic
university dedicated to knowledge in the service of
humanity. It is ranked a top national university and a
"best value" for education. Their network serves 3,000 in
the residence halls.
APconnections (http://www.netequalizer.com) is a privately
held company founded in 2003 and is based in Lafayette,
Colorado.
