Florida Woman Puts Her 15 Minutes of Fame Up for Bid on eBay
PALM COAST, Fla., March 13, 2006 -- A Florida woman, who has
meticulously avoided any type of personal publicity or fame
all her life, has decided to sell her unused "15 minutes of
fame" to the highest bidder on the popular Internet site
eBay.
"I thought I might as well sell it to somebody who could
really use it," said the seller, who wishes to remain
anonymous.
The woman's identity is a tightly held secret. "If we
divulge her name to the media, it would use up some of her
fame time," said her spokesman, Doug Garrison. "Then she
wouldn't have as much to sell."
The eBay listing goes live today, and is scheduled to last
seven days. The high bidder will be announced in a public
relations campaign delivered to over 10,000 media outlets,
so it's possible that the buyer's fame could far exceed pop
artist Andy Warhol's suggested timeframe. It was Warhol's
assertion that since our culture was so enamored by fame
and publicity eventually everyone in the world would be
famous for 15 minutes.
"Hit television show Americon Idol is the perfect example of
this. Thousands of hopefuls sing their heart out (sometimes
very badly) for a shot at the brass ring of fame. Now, it
looks like all you have to do is log on to eBay and make a
bid," said Garrison.
