Press Release'Nursery Tap, Hip to Toe' Receives George Foster Peabody AwardGIG HARBOR, Wash., May 16, 2005 -- When the winners of the 64th Annual Peabody Awards were announced last month, one of the 32 honorees was not like the others: For the first time in Peabody history, a direct-to-home children's video was recognized as one of the best in electronic media. "Nursery Tap, Hip to Toe" (http://www.nurserytap.com), directed and produced by award-winning actress and writer Juleen Murray Shaw, will soon be a permanent part of the University of Georgia Libraries' prestigious Peabody Archive as well as the Museum of Television and Radio in New York."'Nursery Tap, Hip to Toe' is delightfully different; this collection of 30 well-known - and not-so-well-known - nursery rhymes introduces children to a full range of the performing arts," stated the Peabody Foundation. The DVD/CD set features 30 nursery rhymes set to tap, hip-hop and ballet. Each is choreographed, costumed and filmed against colorful sets to give the young child a complete sensory experience - and all are shot from the waist down, allowing viewers of all ages to imagine themselves in the rhymes. Murray, whose own child inspired her to create Nursery Tap, collaborated with actress/dancer Brynn Bromley and dancer Krystal McMullin to update traditional nursery rhymes for the 21st century. "Through Nursery Tap, young viewers will gently be introduced to the performing arts in an entertaining, stimulating and challenging way," Murray said. "They will joyfully want to sing, dance and recite these tiny treasures of literature. I call this layered learning because children are simultaneously experiencing and assimilating the musicality of the spoken word and the art and physicality of dance." Along with the Peabody Award, "Nursery Tap, Hip to Toe" has received several other honors this year, including a 2005 Parents' Choice "Recommended" Award, a 2005 Telly Award, a 2005 KIDS FIRST! Endorsement and the Dove Foundation Seal of Approval with the highest rating of five Doves.
