Press Release
Natural Capitalism Pioneer L. Hunter Lovins Joins Global
Academy Team
SARASOTA, Fla., July 18, 2002 -- Walter Link, Chairman of
the Global Academy (GA), announced today that L. Hunter
Lovins, award-winning environmentalist, founder and former
CEO of the Rocky Mountain Institute and one of the
originators of Natural Capitalism, has been appointed
Director of the GA's Natural Capitalism Academy.
"We are very excited to have Hunter join our leadership
team," said Link. "I have collaborated with Hunter for many
years on the Global Academy's Genome Institute and the
ongoing development of Natural Capitalism, including our
forthcoming book, Human Dimensions of Natural Capitalism. I
greatly admire Hunter's clarity and dynamism. She will be a
tremendous catalyst for the success of this latest addition
to the Global Academy."
The GA is a not-for-profit organization, which is directly
involved in promoting education, dialogue, networking, and
concrete action. It is organized into "Institutes" or areas
of focus including: responsible investing, corporate social
responsibility, natural capitalism, global leadership,
genetic technology, integrative medicine, and education.
The recently launched service division, GA WORKS, provides a
full range of creative conference-related services to
like-minded companies and organizations on a
fee-for-service-basis.
Together with Link, GA President Tom Valente, and Business
Development Director David Elliott, Lovins' first major
project will be to develop curricula and educational
programs for the Natural Capitalism Academy based on Lovins'
1999 book, Natural Capitalism.
"Making Natural Capitalism a leading principle for business
and society worldwide has long been a goal of mine," said
Lovins. "Now I'll be able to bring these concepts to a wider
business audience."
Lovins will also be working with the GA WORKS team to create
a Natural Capitalism Program Series, which includes
briefings for corporate leaders, executive seminars, and
workshops that will enable managers to increase profits,
reduce costs, enhance brand equity, and help companies
become more socially and environmentally responsible.
Echoing Link's enthusiasm, Lovins stated, "I am honored to
be working with a group of individuals who have the vision
and expertise to educate and inform the public in so many
critical areas. The Natural Capitalism Academy will build on
this work, spreading the message that sustainability and
corporate success depend on each other."
Lovins is a world-recognized celebrity in the energy and
sustainability communities, having worked on these issues
since 1965. Originally trained as a lawyer, Lovins
co-founded the California Conservation Project (Tree
People), and subsequently the Rocky Mountain Institute,
which she led for 20 years. Hunter has lectured extensively,
including at the World Economic Forum at Davos, the
International Symposium on Sustainable Development in
Shanghai, and the Global Economic Forum in Washington D.C.
Lovins' areas of expertise include sustainable development,
energy and resource policy, economic development, climate
change, land management, and fire rescue and emergency
medicine. She has co-authored nine books including Natural
Capitalism.
Among her many honors, Lovins has shared a 1982 Mitchell
Prize, a 1983 Right Livelihood Award (often called the
"alternative Nobel Prize"), the 1993 Nissan Prize, and the
1999 Lindbergh Award. In 2000 she was named Time Magazine
Hero of the Planet. In 2001 she received the Shingo Prize
for Manufacturing Research and the Leadership in Business
Award. She was also chosen as one of four people from North
America as a delegate to the UN Prep conference for the
Earth Summit conference. Walter Link was also named a
representative from Europe for the conference, and co-wrote
the paper, "Insurmountable Opportunities", with Lovins.
